Almost 5,400 followers of Eliseo Soriano, a religious cult leader of Ang Dating Daan in the Philippines, has left the organisation because of widespread corruption, exposed rumours of homosexual affairs and homosexuality by the cult leader and his followers, as well as extortion of almost P76 Million transfer of cult funds to Eli Soriano’s personal bank accounts in Switzerland and many other scandals.
Many cult followers are now beginning to realise that they followed a dangerous and misleading organisation in the name of God and of Christ promising salvation that’s not going to happen.
The origins of Ang Dating Daan began with Nicolas Perez, an expelled minister of the INC, together with a certain Teofila Ora, established their own church in 1936 called ‘Iglesia Verdadero’. The partnership between Ora and Perez did not last. Perez was Soriano’s mentor during his formative years as a preacher. When Perez died, Soriano renamed the organisation so many times to prevent further court cases with his former colleagues and church leaders.
Soriano’s doctrines and teachings are based on ‘unbiblical and distorted lies as well as copied teachings from other churches and unscriptural fantasies’, according to Rey Ismael, a former INC Minister who was enticed by Soriano for a monthly salary, a car and a house and lot in exchange for trying to destroying the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s solid stance and credibility.
“I left Soriano’s cult organisation and immediately returned to the Iglesia Ni Cristo after knowing how misleading, confusing, distorted and how dangerous the doctrines of Eliseo Soriano and Ang Dating Daan really are”, argued Ismael.
Much of Soriano’s credibility was damaged after the release of a series of ‘Komiks’ which turned out to be true and factual about the inner workings of Ang Dating Daan.
Many of their so called ‘Co-ordinating Centers’ are closing down because of dwindling membership as well as extortion and corruption of church funds and offerings. “Binubulsa ng mga church officers ang mga abuloy”, according to Grace Mangalindan, a former ADD member in Cubao, Quezon City. “There are so many offences as well as ever changing doctrines (papalit-palit na mga aral at doktrina ni Soriano. Before, single members were not allowed to get married at all, Soriano would not allow it. We did not have a Holy Supper etc., we were always forced to go to Apalit to join everyone else at the Convention Center for fellowship and we all end up working hard and being forced to purchase Soriano’s goods and services i.e. shoes, food, jewelry, bra etc. to pay for his millions of debt and court cases against the INC”.
